Caving Guide / Instructor

If you’re the kind of person who stays calm under pressure, loves the outdoors in all seasons, and gets real satisfaction from helping others do something they’ll remember for life—this role might be for you.

As a Caving Guide/Instructor, you’ll lead small groups (up to 8 guests) on our interpretive tours in and around Rat’s Nest Cave - a Wild cave near Canmore, Alberta. You’ll combine technical competence with great group management—creating a safe, inspiring, well-run experience from start to finish.

Reports to: Senior Caving Guide/Instructor or Lead Caving Guide/Instructor

What You’ll Do

Guiding & Instruction
  • Lead groups of up to eight (8) guests on Explorer and/or Adventure Tours (as approved by management).

  • Deliver high-quality, safe, guest-focused cave experiences.

  • Educate and empower visitors through interpretation—helping guests understand cave environments, stewardship, and the sport of caving.

  • Promote and represent Canmore Caverns Ltd. in a professional, positive way—both in the field and around the community.

  • Provide guidance and supervision to the public in Rat’s Nest Cave (customers and non-customers, when required).

  • Support and participate in rescue operations as directed by supervisors.

Preparation, Gear, and Operational Excellence
  • Prepare, inspect, clean, and maintain company equipment according to the training manual.

  • Contribute to smooth daily operations: pre-trip readiness, post-trip clean-up, and keeping systems organized and consistent.

Office Support (as needed)
  • Assist with front-of-house tasks, including:

    • Keeping the office space clean and guest-ready (as instructed by the Office Manager)

    • Supporting guests using the cash machine and POS system

    • Organizing and maintaining office/company equipment

Maintenance & Stewardship
  • Support ongoing trail maintenance and cave maintenance to help protect the resource and improve the guest experience.

What We’re Looking For

We’re looking for guides who are technically capable, safety-minded, and genuinely enjoy working with people. You should be comfortable teaching, supporting nervous guests, and maintaining a professional presence in challenging environments.

Required Qualifications
  • Wilderness First Aid valid through the contracted guiding period:

    • 40-hour or 80-hour certification

  • Group Management Certification (IGA, OCC, or equivalent)

  • Valid driver’s license (Class 5 minimum) and reliable vehicle (licensed/insured for the full contracted period)

  • Reliable cell phone

  • Cave rescue workshop completed within the last 2 years (BCCR, ACRO, or equivalent)

    • A suitable equivalent is available to staff during the guide training period

  • Guide training completed within the 12 months prior to the end of the contracted guiding period

Working Conditions

This is a field-first role with real variety and real responsibility.

  • Work up to five days per week, on shifts scheduled by the Office Manager

  • Occasional availability outside normal hours may be required depending on operational needs

  • Work in challenging conditions, including: inclement weather, confined spaces, darkness, cold and heat—while maintaining the health, safety, and experience of your client group

Physical Demands

Caving is physical—there’s no way around it. This role includes:

  • Hiking in mountainous terrain

  • Standing, crawling, stooping, and moving through uneven cave environments

  • Supporting and assisting clients throughout the tour

  • Manual labor related to equipment preparation, upkeep, and operational maintenance

  • Participating in rescue response if required

What We Offer (Benefits & Support)

  • Meaningful work: You’ll help people do something they’ll remember for the rest of their lives.

  • High standards + strong team culture: Safety, professionalism, and guest experience come first—always.

  • Skill development: Ongoing learning in guiding, interpretation, group leadership, and cave operations.

  • Training support: Access to a suitable rescue-workshop equivalent during the guide training period (as noted above).

  • A one-of-a-kind workplace: Rat’s Nest Cave is not an office job—and that’s the point.

  • Great Staff Perks: Gear, fam tours, pro deals, staff trips, bonuses and more.

Who Thrives Here

You’ll likely enjoy (and succeed in) this role if you:

  • Take safety seriously and stay steady under pressure

  • Communicate clearly and confidently with groups

  • Enjoy teaching and adapting to different guest needs

  • Can be warm and professional at the same time

  • Respect caves as sensitive environments—and want to advocate for them

  • Take pride in preparation, systems, and doing things the right way

Overview

A caving guide/instructor is primarily responsible for leading groups of up to 8 people on interpretive tours in and around Rat’s Nest Cave, in Canmore, Alberta and for all of the relevant preparation, clean-up, customer service, safety and rescue work involved with those tours.

The Show

What remains when the body is still? When we slip toward our final dream, beneath the ground, the layers of prehistoric limestone — among the bones of creatures who once swam the warm water oceans that lay upon the land? Let go the comforts of home and follow the tones of the hang drum down into the deep — the realm beneath the surface, deep in the belly of a forgotten place and time. Enter the darkness . . . see the light.

The Festival of Animated Objects, Canadian Academy of Mask and Puppetry, and Canmore Cave Tours presents a new, immersive opera experience, featuring original choral music by Cassandra J. Dueck.

Cave of Dreams is a reflective ode to the other side; featuring stirring choral arrangements, luminous puppetry and hand drum accompaniment. Experience the acoustics of a real, undeveloped natural cave. This is not your typical opera event - you'll be dressed head-to-toe in high-quality caving equipment and teamed up with the experienced guides at Canmore Cave Tours to walk, shimmy and crawl into the depths of the earth to reach your performance venue.

1 Performance only:

  • September 28 in Rat’s Nest Cave, Canmore
COMPANY

Cave of Dreams is the invention of a group of artists bound by the night sky and a love affair between the moon and a limestone burrow.

After working together on the Iniskim project, a vision emerged of an experience deep beneath the earth, with sound and light, voice and symbol.

With guidance from choral master Jean-Louis Bleau, Cassandra J. Dueck has devised several original compositions to complete the score. Puppetry design and direction is being led by David Lane and Randi Edmundson; Kit Benz rounds out the puppetry performance team.

The Ensemble choir is Jessica Sick, Maddie Aldridge, James Mills, and Chris Dueck, with choral direction by Cassandra J. Dueck. Bruce Barton has been our brave dramaturg; produced by Peter Balkwall and Jean-Louis Bleau.

Cave of Dreams would not be possible without the incredible support and shared vision of our producing partner, Canmore Cave Tours.

Liability waivers are an unfortunate but necessary part of any adventure activity. We recommend that you take the time before your tour, or even before your reservation, to thoroughly review this legal document.

Anyone participating in a Canmore Cave Tours activity must complete a liability waiver, including minors. In the case of minors, it is very important that a parent or guardian also reads and signs the waiver.

Once you have completed your booking, you will receive a link that will allow you to sign your waiver online. We have included a handy video to explain all of the components of the waiver and to ensure the process goes smoothly. Again, it is recommended to review the waiver prior to making your reservation and if you have any questions please contact us.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is there a minimum age?

This experience is for adults only please.

  • Is there a maximum size?

Generally speaking, fitness is more of a concern than size. However, all participants must wear a safety harness which has a maximum waist size of 46" (116 cm) and a maximum leg size of 33" (84 cm). If you have any concerns about size please don't hesitate to contact us.

  • What is included and what should I bring?

We provide all of the necessary caving equipment including coveralls, kneepads, gloves, helmet & headlamp, harness & safety lanyard, and backpack. The backpack will be shared by two people and will not go into the cave.

You will need to bring good footwear, warm clothing, a camera (optional), 1L of water and a pocket-sized, cave-friendly snack. Also, if you will require medication during the tour it is a good idea to bring 2x what you would expect to use, just in case.

Footwear must be closed-toe and should have a sturdy tread. Hiking boots or shoes are best, but a sturdy running shoe will also work. Other options include rubber boots or winter boots (in the winter)

The cave is 5 degrees celsius, so warm clothing is recommended. Imagine what you would wear if you had to spend a few hours in a refrigerator. We recommend long pants, long sleeves, a warm sweater, hoodie or jacket. Synthetic fabrics are best as they will keep you warm even if you get wet.

Any cameras going into the cave will need to fit into your pockets. We do not allow backpacks in the cave. Small point-and-shoot cameras or smart phones are welcome but please keep in mind that the cave environment is not particularly friendly towards electronics. High humidity and dust can damage equipment, and screens can break if you accidentally sit on it. Electronics are brought at your own risk.

  • Is transportation provided?

No, transportation is not provided. If you do not have your own vehicle we can arrange a taxi to the cave for you at an additional cost. You can use Canmore's public transit to get to our office.

  • How hard is the tour?

The hike to the cave takes approximately 30-40 minutes and is uphill the whole way on a mountain trail. Most of our guests find this to be the hardest part of the day, but we do take lots of stops along the way to enjoy the scenery.

Once in the cave the pace is quite slow as we maneuver through the passages. This is not a flat walking tour. There are no handrails, walkways or fixed lighting. We climb, crawl, slide and wiggle our way around the cave so it is best to have a moderate level of fitness.Even more important though is your sense of adventure!

  • Are there rats or bats?

Rat's Nest Cave is named after the nests of Bushy-tailed Wood Rats found in the entrance. This species of super-cute rodents is native to the area and they use the cave as a home due to it's constantly warm temperatures and protection from predators. We rarely see the rats, and if we do there is usually just one.

Bat's are rarely seen at Rat's Nest Cave. The cave is not a hibernaculum (a place where bats hibernate through the winter). We usually only see the occasional bat in the summer as they are passing through the area.

  • Is this tour suitable for me if I'm pregnant?

Yes, but only up until the end of the first trimester (12 weeks).

It is always advisable to seek advice from your doctor when participating in activities like caving.
