Hot Springs Near Canmore: Where to Soak in the Rockies


If you're looking for a hot spring in Canmore itself, the short answer is: there isn't one. Alberta doesn't have many natural hot springs at all, which surprises a lot of visitors given how much geothermal activity the Rockies suggest. The closest one is about thirty minutes away, and from there your options fan out west into British Columbia, culminating in a natural pool most people never bother to find.

Here's where to go, what each one is actually like, why the water is hot in the first place, and one in-town alternative for days when you're done driving.


Banff Upper Hot Springs

Banff Upper Hot Springs sits at the base of Sulphur Mountain, about 30 minutes from Canmore. It is the closest option and the easiest to add to a half-day outing.

The thermal waters around Sulphur Mountain also played a central role in the creation of Banff National Park. Indigenous Peoples had known and used these waters for generations before three Canadian Pacific Railway workers filed claims to the Cave and Basin springs in 1883. The resulting ownership dispute helped prompt the federal government to establish a hot-springs reserve in 1885. That reserve was expanded into Rocky Mountains Park in 1887 and renamed Banff National Park in 1930.

At 1,585 metres, Banff Upper Hot Springs is Canada's highest developed hot spring. The pool is kept between 37 and 40°C, with views across the valley toward Mount Rundle.

Entry is first-come, first-served. Advance tickets and reservations are not available, so weekends, holidays, and summer afternoons can involve a wait. Go earlier in the day or later in the evening if you prefer a quieter experience.

The amount of natural spring water reaching the pool changes throughout the year. During low-flow periods, particularly in winter, heated municipal water may be added to keep the pool operating at a safe and comfortable temperature. Natural flow generally increases again with the spring melt.

The bathhouse is a federal heritage building, and its interpretive exhibits document how bathing at the site has changed since the late 1800s.


Radium Hot Springs

Radium Hot Springs is roughly 90 minutes to two hours from Canmore via Highway 93 South, depending on traffic, weather, and roadwork. It is the larger of the two nearby Parks Canada hot-springs facilities, with a shallow soaking pool kept between 37 and 40°C and a separate deep swimming pool for cooling off.

The spring water is naturally odourless and contains minerals including sulphate, calcium, bicarbonate, silica, and magnesium. It also contains a harmless trace amount of radon, which inspired the site's present name in the early 1900s.

The drive is part of the appeal. Highway 93 passes through forests, wetlands, burned landscapes, and mountain valleys that feel noticeably different from the shorter drive to Banff.

The highway also passes a network of wildlife fencing and underpasses. Parks Canada built nine underpasses along a 15-kilometre section of Highway 93 South, drawing on the successful wildlife-crossing program in Banff National Park, where similar measures reduced wildlife-vehicle collisions by more than 80%.

Radium's hours change seasonally, and the cool pool may operate on a reduced schedule in winter. Road construction can also add substantial travel time, so check current pool hours and Highway 93 conditions before leaving Canmore.

If you're deciding between the two developed springs, Banff Upper is closer and easier to fit into half a day. Radium offers more space and works better as the centrepiece of a full-day outing.


Lussier Hot Springs at Whiteswan Lake

BC Parks has closed the pools and the pathway leading to them because of unstable and dislodged boulders in the pool area. The closure applies to all public access and remains in effect until further notice.

Do not travel to Whiteswan Lake Provincial Park expecting to enter the hot springs. Check the BC Parks website for current information and respect all gates, fencing, and posted closure signs.

Lussier Hot Springs is located near the entrance to Whiteswan Lake Provincial Park, at approximately the 17.5-kilometre marker on the gravel Whiteswan Forest Service Road. Before the closure, visitors reached the pools by following a short, steep pathway from the parking area to the Lussier River.

The setting was far more rustic than Banff or Radium: natural-looking rock pools beside a cold river, without a bathhouse or conventional pool deck. The pools offered different temperatures depending on their distance from the hottest inflow and the river.

That simplicity was the attraction, but the site was neither secret nor untouched. Its small pools, narrow access road, and fragile riverside setting made it especially vulnerable to crowding and damage. If the site eventually reopens, visitors should confirm conditions with BC Parks before making the trip.


Mist Mountain

Mist Mountain Hot Spring sits above 2,500 metres in Kananaskis Country. Published geological research identifies it as the highest known thermal spring occurrence in Canada, considerably higher than the developed pool at Banff Upper Hot Springs.

Reaching it involves a steep alpine route with substantial elevation gain, loose terrain, rapidly changing weather, and no facilities. The pools themselves are extremely small and accommodate only a few people at a time.

We're deliberately leaving out trailhead directions. The route is best suited to hikers who can independently research an alpine objective, assess mountain conditions, navigate without relying on signs, and turn around when conditions deteriorate.

Access is seasonal, and portions of Highway 40 close during winter. A Kananaskis Conservation Pass is also required for vehicles parked in the area. Check Alberta Parks advisories and road conditions before leaving home.

If you visit, minimize your time in the pools when others are waiting, pack out everything you bring, stay on durable surfaces, and avoid altering the rocks or water channels. The setting is remarkable, but its small size makes it particularly sensitive to heavy use.


The no-driving option: Everwild Nordic Spa

One honest disclaimer first: Everwild isn't a hot spring. Its pools are purpose-heated rather than supplied by geothermal water. But if what you really want is to soak outdoors among the mountains without leaving Canmore, this is the in-town answer.

Everwild opened on November 20, 2025, at 1 Silvertip Trail. Developed by Basecamp Resorts, it is Canmore's first Nordic spa.

The outdoor circuit includes five pools ranging from a 15°C cold plunge to 39°C hot pools, along with saunas, steam rooms, a salt lodge, relaxation spaces, and fire gardens. The experience is built around cycles of heat, cold, and rest, with optional guided sauna and steam rituals.

Everwild is an adults-only facility for guests 18 and older, making it better suited to a post-adventure date or quiet recovery day than a family outing. It is also priced as a full spa experience rather than a public swimming pool.

Where the natural hot springs offer mineral water and history, Everwild offers variety and zero driving. Different tools, same sore legs.


How do hot springs form?

The Rocky Mountain hot springs described here begin with water from rain and melting snow. What makes them unusual is the journey that water takes underground.

In the Banff area, precipitation enters fractured rock at high elevation on Mount Rundle and nearby high ground. The water circulates through layers of sedimentary rock to depths of roughly three kilometres, where it is warmed by the Earth's natural geothermal gradient. As it moves through the rock, it also dissolves minerals including sulphate, calcium, bicarbonate, and magnesium.

The warmed water eventually rises through the Sulphur Mountain Thrust Fault, a large fracture zone where layers of rock have been pushed over one another. The fault acts as a natural pathway, allowing deeply circulated groundwater to return to the surface as a thermal spring.

Radium's water follows a similar broad process through a separate underground system in Kootenay National Park. Differences in flow path, depth, residence time, and contact with surrounding rock help give each spring its own temperature and mineral profile.

This process is closely connected to karst: the gradual dissolution of soluble rock such as limestone. Many karst caves form through epigene processes, in which surface water moves downward through the rock. Other caves are associated with hypogene processes, in which water rises from deeper underground. These terms describe the source and direction of cave-forming groundwater rather than two categories of hot spring.

Rat's Nest Cave lies within the same broader belt of carbonate rock beneath Grotto Mountain. Research by geologist and Canmore Cave Tours founder Chas Yonge compared its old, non-thermal groundwater routes with the fault-controlled karst system feeding the Banff hot springs.

The two systems are not connected, and Rat's Nest Cave was not formed by hot water. They do, however, demonstrate how water can exploit faults and fractures, dissolve carbonate rock, and leave very different records underground: one as a cool, abandoned cave system and the other as an active thermal spring.

If you're doing both

A soak makes a natural bookend to a day underground. Rat's Nest Cave remains at roughly 4.5°C throughout the year, so most visitors finish a tour ready for warmth.

Banff Upper Hot Springs is close enough to combine with a cave tour on the same day if you start early. Radium works better as a separate full-day outing through Kootenay National Park. If the cave tour uses up your appetite for driving, Everwild is only minutes from central Canmore.

The Adventure Tour runs approximately six hours, including about four hours underground and an 18-metre rappel. The Explorer Tour runs approximately four and a half hours, including about two and a half hours underground, with no rappel. The Adventure Tour explores more of the cave, while both tours offer crawling, climbing, and optional squeezes.
