Hot springs near Canmore: where to soak in the Bow Valley
If you're looking for a hot spring in Canmore itself, the short answer is: there isn't one. Alberta doesn't have many natural hot springs at all, which surprises a lot of visitors given how much geothermal activity the Rockies suggest. The closest one is about thirty minutes away, and from there your options fan out west into British Columbia, culminating in a natural pool most people never bother to find.
Here's where to go, what each one is actually like, why the water is hot in the first place, and one in-town alternative for days when you're done driving.
Banff Upper Hot Springs
Thirty minutes from Canmore, at the base of Sulphur Mountain. This is the closest option and the one most visitors end up at, partly because it's easy and partly because it's the reason Banff National Park exists. In the 1880s, railway workers stumbled on a cave with steaming water inside it. Disputes over who owned that discovery led the federal government to protect the land, and Rocky Mountain National Park (later renamed Banff) was established in 1887.
The pool sits at 1,585 metres, the highest developed hot spring in the country, with views across the valley to Mount Rundle. It's not the highest hot spring, period. That distinction likely belongs to one much harder to reach. Water temperature is held between 37 and 40°C. Entry is first-come, first-served: no online booking, no reservations, just show up. That also means summer afternoons and weekends get crowded. Go early morning or evening if you want the pool to feel like a hot spring and not a busy public pool.
One thing worth knowing before you go: the natural flow isn't always enough to fill the pool on its own. In winter, when flow drops off, heated municipal water tops it up. Come spring melt, the natural spring supplies more on its own. The bathhouse itself is a federal heritage building with old bathing costumes and photos documenting how the site has changed since 1886.
Radium Hot Springs
About 90 minutes to two hours from Canmore via Highway 93, inside Kootenay National Park. Radium is the biggest developed hot spring in the area: a hot pool averaging 37 to 40°C and a separate 25-metre cool pool kept around 27 to 30°C, which makes it more forgiving for kids or anyone who wants a break from the heat. The water here is odourless and rich in silica, calcium, and bicarbonate, plus trace radioactivity, harmless and less than what a watch dial gives off, which is where the name comes from.
The drive is part of the appeal. Highway 93 cuts through Kootenay National Park past wildlife crossing structures that have cut vehicle collisions by a reported 80%, plus stretches of forest, marsh, and mountain scenery you don't get on the shorter Banff run. If you're set on a full day trip rather than an after-hike stop, Radium is the one to plan around. It also gets renovated most falls, so it's worth checking hours before you commit to the drive.
If you're deciding between the two: Banff Upper is closer, smaller, and easier to fit into a half day. Radium is farther, bigger, and works better as its own outing.
Lussier Hot Springs (White Swan)

BC Parks has closed the site after staff found large, dislodged rocks in the upper pool and a compromised retaining wall, creating a rockfall risk. A professional geotechnical engineer reviewed the site and confirmed the instability, recommending the closure remain in place while options were assessed. As an interim safety measure, material from the damaged wall has been repositioned within the upper pool.
BC Parks is working on a phased reopening plan alongside longer-term repair work, but no firm timeline has been set. Check the official order before planning a visit, and respect all posted signage if you're in the area.
Also called White Swan, or the Whiteswan hot springs, after the provincial park they sit in. This one isn't developed at all. No bathhouse, no pool deck. It's a set of natural rock pools right beside the Lussier River, and getting there means an 18-kilometre gravel road followed by a short walk down to the water.
The undeveloped part is the whole draw. Multiple pools sit at different distances from the cold river, so you can find your own temperature by moving closer to or farther from the current. It's seasonal, generally open from spring through fall, and closes when winter access becomes impractical. If Banff Upper feels too much like a public pool, this is the opposite experience: quieter, rougher, and entirely dependent on you making the drive.
Mist Mountain
This one we'll only half-tell you about, and that's on purpose. Mist Mountain hot springs sit in Kananaskis Country, high in the alpine, reached by a 6.4-kilometre trail rated difficult, with real elevation gain. This is likely the highest hot spring in the Rockies, well above Banff Upper, though nobody publishes an official number. Two small pools wait at the end, each one holding about two people at a time. No fee, no facilities.
We're not going to give directions or trailhead details here. Partly because the trail rewards people who put in the work to find it themselves, and partly because two-person pools don't hold up well under high traffic. If you're the kind of hiker who already knows how to research a backcountry route and practices Leave No Trace without being told to, you'll find it. If you're not, the other three are easier days, and just as worth doing.
The no-driving option: Everwild Nordic Spa
One honest disclaimer first: this one isn't a hot spring. The water at Everwild comes from a boiler, not a fault line. But if the whole reason you're reading this is "I want to soak in hot water surrounded by mountains, and I don't want to leave Canmore," this is the answer.
Everwild opened in November 2025 on the former MTN House property on Silvertip Trail, built by Basecamp Resorts as Canmore's first Nordic spa. The idea is contrast therapy: five pools running from a 15°C cold plunge up to a 40°C hot pool, plus saunas, steam rooms, and a salt lodge, cycled hot to cold to rest. There are guided sauna rituals if you want structure and fire pits if you don't. It's adults only (18 and up), so this is the after-the-kids-are-sorted option rather than the family one, and it's priced like a spa, not a public pool.
Where the hot springs give you mineral water and history, Everwild gives you variety and zero driving. Different tools, same sore legs.
How do hot springs form
Every hot spring on this list starts the same way: as rain or snowmelt.
At Banff, that water falls at high elevation, above roughly 2,000 metres on Mount Rundle and Sulphur Mountain, and sinks into the ground. From there it works down through layers of sedimentary rock to a depth of about 3.2 kilometres, picking up heat from the earth as it goes and dissolving minerals like calcium, magnesium, sulphate, and bicarbonate along the way. Eventually it finds its way back up along the Sulphur Mountain Thrust Fault, a fracture where entire slabs of rock have slid over top of each other. That fault is the highway. Without it, the water would have no route back to the surface and no reason to come out anywhere in particular.
Radium's water follows a similar underground journey through a different fault system in Kootenay National Park, which is why its mineral mix and temperature come out slightly different from Banff's, even though both sit in the same mountain range.
Geologists split cave and spring formation into two broad categories. Most caves in the world, somewhere between 80 and 90%, form the way you'd expect: surface water works its way down, picking up carbon dioxide from soil as it goes, and slowly dissolves limestone from above. That's called epigene formation. The other kind, hypogene formation, runs the process from underneath: water forced up from depth, sometimes carrying its own dissolved gases rather than surface-sourced CO2. Banff's springs show the second half of that story: ordinary rain, heated and mineral-loaded at depth, coming back up hot along a fault. Down, then up, on the same rock.
Rat's Nest Cave sits in that same limestone, a few kilometres down the valley under Grotto Mountain. Chas Yonge, the geologist who founded Canmore Cave Tours, published research examining the Banff hot springs from exactly this angle, using seepage water measured inside Rat's Nest Cave as a comparison point for the isotope chemistry of the spring water above ground. His conclusion: the Banff springs are best understood as a karst system, shaped by the same kind of dissolution that carves cave passages, just running on a different water cycle. The cave itself formed through a cooler, slower process: old drainage routes carved by ordinary groundwater working through cracks in the limestone, no hot water involved. Same rock, same valley, two different stories written by water moving through it in different directions.
