Epic Adventures Since 1992

Your Time is Precious.

Make It
Extraordinary.

Most people come to the Rockies for what's above, but only the curious few discover what lies beneath. Rat's Nest Cave stretches four kilometres under Grotto Mountain — carved from ancient limestone and shaped by glaciers. Home to fossils, pictographs, and formations that took millennia to grow, it's an experience that stands the test of time.

Whatever you came to the Rockies for, this will be the part you talk about when you get home.

Real Adventure

You're heading into a real, undeveloped natural cave — no walkways, no fixed lighting, no handrails. You'll be dressed in high-quality caving equipment and teamed up with one of our experienced cave guides for an experience that is uncommonly wild.

Year-Round, Rain or Shine

Mountain weather is unpredictable - unless you're IN the mountain. The Cave is always 5°C. There's no rain, no wind, no snow and no sun, so we can explore the cave any day of the year. TL;DR: We almost never cancel because of weather, so plan with confidence.

A Complete Experience

Most guests are surprised by how much there is to discover down there — the geology, the fossils, the stories your guide brings to life around every corner. The physical challenge is real, but so is the sense that almost anyone, with the right guide and the right attitude, can do this.

We had such a fantastic experience at Canmore Caves, and a huge thank you to our guide, Gabby! She was incredibly kind, patient and encouraging throughout the whole experience. By the end, I was feeling anything but confident and was quite anxious about the last couple of climbs out of the cave. Gabby gave me the motivation, reassurance and support I needed to hoist myself out of there! 😂 She really went above and beyond to make sure I felt supported and never made me feel like I couldn’t do it. 10/10 for Gabby — she was amazing!

The cave was tour amazing! Our tour guide, Gaby, was fabulous and really contributed to an amazing experience. The hike to the cave wasn’t too long, and there were a couple of stops along the way with interesting factoids thrown in. There is a lot of sliding on your buttocks and crawling but it is not too hard. Highly recommended for anyone in the area. I would give it more than five stars, but I can’t.

our first time caving was here and it was amazing. will definitely be returning. our guide was very knowledgeable and helpful, and made us all feel at ease. rats nest cave is super accessible and not scary, but even so, be prepared to be climbing, sliding, pulling on ropes, squeeze and crawling on all fours for a long time. other people in our group thought it was a good idea to bring grandma with them. it’s a solid 30mins hike up a mountain on loose rock and roots just to get to the cave entrance. grandma would not have made it. don’t bring your grandma here. there is an optional squeeze you can do that is super fun and get the blood flowing. if you know some basic climbing skills you will have fun and find this pretty easy. i forgot my water bottle on the way out, but i called and coordinated a time for me to pick it back up on our way out of alberta a few days later. the owner was super nice and accommodating and made sure i got my nalgene back. they go above and beyond here to make sure you have a good and safe time caving.

Let’s start with a very clear statement: This activity is navigating a cave by climbing and crawling wet and muddy rocks, repelling or sliding down dark abysses, and squeezing through confined spaces. This is not a tourist activity. It is a specialized sport. The website says that all that’s required is a moderate level of fitness and a good attitude. I would say this is the bare minimum and not likely sufficient all around. More realistically, I would suggest some experience with either climbing or caving. Thankfully I do actually have pretty good fitness so I was able to complete the cave without disaster. But based on the info on their website, I was not mentally prepared for what this would be and I probably would’ve started with an easier cave. Or the easier tour. I did the Adventure tour. So that’s where I removed a star, because after reading everything provided on the website, I did not actually understand what we were doing. That being said, the guide John was great. We went slow and he explained things well. He was great with questions. Even though I didn’t know what we’d signed up for (even after reading the business’s whole website and watching all of their videos), I was able to do it with a moderate level of fitness and zero previous experience. If you cannot pull up your body weight, I would not recommend this activity.

Amazing experience and the guide was amazing (Annie). One of the finest activity I ever took part in, I am little claustrophobic but the Annie was so supportive that I never felt I am stuck anywhere. It is a must do thing if you are planning trip around the location.

We had such a great time. My 12 year old especially loved it. I am sure all the guides are great, but I just want to mention that Gabby was phenomenal. She was fun and you could tell she really loved what she was doing. She answered all our questions with patience and made the group feel safe and welcome. Thanks so much!
