Rat's Nest Cave is a fascinating place. It is home to ancient bones, pictographs, cave formations, and even North America's smallest mammal, making it a museum, zoo, laboratory, and art gallery all in one amazing location.

Canmore Cave Tours and the Canmore Museum and Geoscience Centre (CMAGS) have teamed up to bring you some amazing speakers from a variety of organizations to help share the cave's fascinating natural history.

Each date will consist of two science-based presentations that focus on cave-related topics incuding biology, geology, climate, exploration, natural history, and much more! You will also have the opportunity to meet the speakers and ask questions.

    Sarah Smith

    2017 Dates & Speakers

March 11, 2017: Sarah Smith (Calgary Zoo)

Why should we thank bats for our dinner?
A self-professed nature nerd and bat lover extraordinaire, Sarah answers this question and shares why bats are not just our cute flying furry friends!

        • Sarah M. Smith has been a professional nature nerd (aka, a naturalist) for over twenty years, sharing her enthusiasm for the natural world with audiences and visitors from BC to DC, and plenty of stops in between! She has been a part of the education department of the Calgary Zoo for fourteen years, and is a huge advocate of the crucial conservation role that zoos and aquariums play in preserving biodiversity. Sarah is an IGA-accredited naturalist and an official BirdSleuth Ambassador for the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, spending time connecting urban schools and clubs to their local natural spaces.

In addition to having a passion for science and nature, Sarah is also a professional actor and writer, and has found a fun and quirky career niche in “science theatre”. In addition to writing, producing, and performing educational theatre pieces for the Calgary Zoo, Alberta Parks, City of Calgary Parks, and the Smithsonian National Zoo, she spent eight years working with Evergreen Theatre, a science-based theatre company in Calgary, and now runs her own company, Rogue Naturalist Science Theatre, which specializes in teaching science through the fine arts and nature education.

Always a champion for the misunderstood species of this planet, Sarah loves teaching about bats and their extraordinary natural history. From “finger flying” to echolocation, bats are possessed of an awe-inspiring body design and amazing sensory capabilities. In addition, most humans have no idea how crucial bats are to keeping our grocery stores stocked and our ecosystems healthy and functional. Using a variety of fun props, costumes, facts, and stories, Sarah will share a brief history of bats, then connect the science to the local ecology with a focus on the conservation challenges that our local bat species face today.

Explore the Rat's Nest Cave:  Interactive Map

Rat’s Nest Cave is a constant 5°C (41°F) all year.  Why is that?  Because caves reflect the mean annual temperature, so no matter what the outside weather is like, it’s always pleasant inside the cave.  Like most alpine caves, it is cool in summer, mild in winter.  In 1987, the cave was designated a Provincial Historic Site.  Access to the cave is restricted to protect the delicate environment within. The Rat’s Nest Cave has over 4 km of explored passage, and lies under Grotto Mountain near Canmore, Alberta.
